Wedding Planning Tips: The Bathroom Situation
Nobody puts “porta john” on the wedding mood board. Florists, sure. String lights across an oak grove, absolutely. A signature cocktail named after the dog, naturally. But the bathroom plan? That conversation usually happens late, often in a panic, and almost always with the venue coordinator giving you a look that says I tried to bring this up months ago.
Here’s how to handle it before the panic sets in.
Why Outdoor and Off-Site Weddings Need a Plan
If your venue is a vineyard, a private estate, a beach, a barn, or really anywhere that isn’t a hotel ballroom, restrooms are not a given. Even venues with indoor facilities frequently can’t handle 150 guests in formal wear cycling through two stalls over a five-hour reception. That’s how lines form, that’s how dresses get stepped on, and that’s how the entire vibe of a wedding shifts in a way nobody wants.
The Trailer Is Your Friend
For weddings, a standard porta potty is rarely the right call. What you actually want is a restroom trailer. These are climate-controlled, have flushing toilets, real sinks with running water, hardwood-style floors, mirrors, soft lighting, and often music. Guests walk in expecting the worst and walk out genuinely impressed.
A two-stall trailer comfortably handles up to about 100 guests for a five-hour event. Three- and four-stall trailers scale up from there. For weddings over 200 guests, two trailers placed at opposite ends of the venue eliminate any line entirely.
Where to Put Them
This is where a lot of couples make a mistake worth avoiding. Putting the restroom trailer ten feet from the dance floor is loud and awkward. Tucking it 200 yards down a dirt path past a chicken coop is worse, especially in heels.
The sweet spot is roughly 50 to 100 feet from the reception area, on relatively level ground, with a clear path that’s lit at night. If the venue has power within reach, even better. Most trailers can run on generators, but plugging into shore power keeps things quiet and uninterrupted.
Don’t Skip the Details
A few touches go a long way. Stocking the trailer with the same hand soap and lotion you’d find at a nice restaurant. A small basket of mints, hairpins, and a stain pen. A printed sign with a thank-you note from the couple. None of this costs much, and it transforms what could’ve been an afterthought into a moment guests actually mention.
Booking Lead Time
For peak season, mid-May through early October across California, restroom trailers book out six to nine months in advance. The fancier the unit, the longer the lead time. If your wedding is at a private estate in Santa Ynez, Malibu, Carmel, or anywhere in between, lock in your trailer the same week you lock in your venue.
